News Bulletin - October 2009

Our news bulletin this month comes to you from Auckland, New Zealand.

It is here, at the headquarters of Colour Communications Inc Australasia (CCIA) where the production of the Colourways forecast fandecks for Australia and New Zealand is underway.  Impressive facilities, new technologies and dedicated hands is what a Colourways fandeck production is all about, and this company has these qualities in abundance. Interestingly, the company matches paint colour by using paint in its printing process rather than printing inks so you can rely on the accuracy of the colour samples.

For the first time, Colourways has commenced a partnership with Resene Paints and CCIA. Resene has developed an enormous following in New Zealand and Australia – and it’s no wonder.  Get hold of one of the company’s fandecks (try the dedicated 2010 range or that of fashion designer Karen Walker) and the excitement and ideas just spill out. The paint range is highly directional and of exceptional quality. We have used Resene exclusively in the Colourways forecasts for 2011.

Updates of the forecast release dates and all other news will feature on the new Colourways website www.colourways.com.au.  We will notify you by email of each bulletin and include a link to the site. All new memberships and renewals, event attendance, and forecast purchases can now be done online.

Events and Forecasts

Looking to the future as we do, Colourways now looks a little different.  We have a new logo and website, but there is also a new structure and calendar.

As of 2010, the workshop will be held each September with the forecasts released in February at the start of a new working year. As each forecast takes months to produce with its hand-made fandeck and new products samples, this new calendar will avoid the wait during the middle of the year when we are all keen to have this valuable information on hand. Each new year will now herald a new forecast.

We are also launching our new materials project which will see manufacturers and suppliers present newly-developed products in a Colourways forum. You will meet the people who design and manufacture these products, view samples, and fully understand the capabilities and options they offer. This will form a new mid-year event on our calendar and will be free for members.

New Products

Colourways is working with an extraordinary group of companies in sponsors CSR PGH, Viridian, Resene Paints and Colour Communications. In this news bulletin, we look at developments at PGH and Viridian.

The Colourways forecasts have featured bricks for a few years now.  The simple brick, so rudimentary and raw has been transformed by the development of new glazes and surface textures. We particularly like the new Altitude range from PGH that features a textured, glossy, black brick amongst other colours.  Combining these sophisticated finishes with the thermal qualities of bricks, it will come as no surprise that bricks are predicted to reemerge as a finished interior product.  For more information and images go to www.pghclay.com.au.

A number of glass products from Viridian have recently been assessed and certified for inclusion on Australia’s leading online database of sustainable products: ecospecifier.org.  It could be reason enough to explore the work being undertaken by Viridian but its product range is also compelling.  And for those who have asked to see more of the coloured, mirrored glass from Viridian which we saw in our 2010 forecasts, it is now available in a range of colours, from moody blacks to fluorescent greens.  Go to www.viridianglass.com.

Li Edelkoort and Trend Union

Renowned trend forecaster, Li Edelkoort, has just released the latest Trend Union publications for Spring/Summer 2011 in Paris. As the agent for Trend Union in Australia and New Zealand, please contact Colourways for orders or to arrange to view the publications. It was fascinating to read about Li’s observations in a recent interview with Symrise. Wanderlust

Kathy Demos in Auckland

Colour

Silver, yellow, coral - stunning in the clear New Zealand light.

Food

SPQR in Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby. In the style of Colourways colleague, David Scott, start with a bottle of Verve (it helps you get a table on busy nights, and it’s always busy) then choose from a great menu of Italian flavours.

Coffee

My long time favourite, the modest Cafe Melba in Vulcan Lane, the most atmospheric laneway in the city.

Jewellery

Fingers, for the work of acclaimed NZ artist Warwick Freeman amongst others.  The Auckland Art Gallery is nearby.

Retreat

The Boatshed on Waiheke Island. There is nothing that the owners haven’t thought about to ensure a wonderful stay, but the food is reason enough.

Market

La Cigale, a warehouse with a range of French antiques, fashion and food expands into a farmers market on Saturdays. I never miss it when in Auckland over the weekend, often catching up with fashion designer and Colourways advisor, Liz Mitchell, for coffee and viennoiseries.
